Adoption Seminar Objectives

  • Develop awareness and sensitivity to the importance of the child's birth family, race, and culture.

  • Increase understanding and sensitivity to how loss impacts the child and family.

  • Increase understanding of the ongoing process of adoption for the child and family.

  • Identify characteristics of children available for adoption.

  • Strengthen your awareness of the developmental stages of children.

  • Understand the attachment cycle and development themes of adoption.


This seminar will occur in a group setting with other adoptive parents completing the home study process. It meets the State of New Hampshire Child Placing Rules as well as the Hague and U.S. State Department regulations on intercountry adoption. The curriculum has also been approved by Holt International.

About the Instructor

Ms. Kelly Smith, LICSW has worked with adoptive families for the past 25 years. She has a private practice specializing in attachment, trauma, loss and grief, in Concord, NH. Ms. Smith has a passion for international travel and has worked extensively in orphanages worldwide. She has also traveled with adoptive families on a number of homeland tours.
